ProtectNet enables the secure licensing of software for networked environments. The ProtectNet license server controls the number of protected software instances running in the network and allows the software to run only within the limitations defined by the software publisher.
Overview
A network version of a software consists of the following three major components:
The protected software The software which runs on every workstation or terminal of a terminal server. The original software is modified by using the Protect Software Executable protection with the ProtectNet option. Source code is not required and the executable can be modified “as is”.
A license server The license server is installed on a computer (server OS is not required) that can be accessed via TCP/IP from all workstations that are supposed to run the protected software. Protect Software provides an installation which can be embedded into other installations and run silently as well as samples for extending the license server installation.
One or more licenses The license server allows of denies running the protected software on workstations based on rules defined in a license. These rules may be the number of clients allowed in the network in parallel or time limitation (e.g. for enabling trial period or software that only runs for a certain time, such as a month or year).
