Latest IDC Piracy Study
Last year, the world spent more than $50 billion
(US dollars) for commercial packaged software
that runs on personal computers (PCs). Yet,
software worth almost $80 billion was actually
installed.
For every two dollars’ worth of
software purchased legitimately, one dollar’s
worth was obtained illegally. The piracy rate —
the number of pirated software units divided by
the total number of units put into use — was
36 percent in 2003.
